THE PRESIDENTS CUP 1994

Being a part of the inaugural Presidents Cup in 1994 was the highlight of my golfing career.

I was part of the team meetings in the lead-up months to the event. However, I was not initially selected. As fate would have it, I received a phone call on the Monday of the event, suggesting that I would fly from Tokyo to Washington DC on the chance I was needed as a replacement for a player who was under the weather.

By the time I arrived in the nation's capital, Greg Norman had officially withdrawn due to a medical issue, and I was now part of the team.

A White House dinner, playing with world number one Nick Price against Couples and Love III all became reality quickly, and it was a week to never forget.

Most of us imagine golf and especially professional golf as a singular pursuit.

From my early amateur days, the team concept was a huge factor and these events were without doubt some of my fondest memories.

In my state team, we won the Interstate team matches in consecutive years, and it was amazing to do so as it was all part of a team effort.

As an Australian representative, we had some wonderful trips to New Zealand, Thailand, Sweden and Scotland.

There is without doubt still a lot of room for team events in professional golf.

The Ryder Cup is held in the highest esteem by every golf fan. It is different. It's electrifying. It's pride of the team and your country.

To be part of the very first Presidents Cup was an honor. Something I will never forget.
